Fashion Impacts
Saving the World, One Purchase at a Time
We all know that feel good feeling of buying something new. That magical moment when serotonin hits our brains rewarding us for our latest purchase. Many of us are unaware of how this feel good-induced moment is a feel bad moment for our environment.
“Fast Fashion” Changes our Consumption
Fast Fashion: Fast fashion has completely reshaped how consumers consume clothing products. If you’re unfamiliar with fast fashion, it has been a growing trend that results from online shopping. Firstly, it is products that were made quickly to fit a momentary trend. Often, it offers us as consumers cheaper goods. Budget friendly to our wallet, costly to our planet. Secondly, fast fashion is guilty of largely impacting the following factors; waste, water usage, the carbon footprint, and pollution.
The Pains of Fast Fashion
- Increased waste
- Increased water usage
- Increased carbon footprint
- Increased pollution
Only Worn Once
Waste: The average person throws away 70 to 80 pounds of clothing annually. Overall, 95% of those textiles head to landfills, when they could be recycled. This means that we’re producing over 13 million tons of waste from textiles each year. This matters because it can take on average up to 200+ years for textiles to break back down into organic matter.
- No! The cat shelter’s on to me.
- And remember, don’t do anything that affects anything, unless it turns out you were supposed to, in which case, for the love of God, don’t not do it!
- I don’t ‘need’ to drink. I can quit anytime I want!
Save the planet in style by shopping second hand or consigning gently loved items that still have life left in them.
Water Usage
Water Usage: Did you know the cotton shirt you own sitting in your closet took 2,700 liters of water to produce? Not only does the fashion industry use 4% of our global freshwater, but it also contributes to 20% of the water pollution from dying textiles.
A Footprint You don’t Want to Leave Behind
Carbon Footprint: There’s a large carbon footprint behind transporting textiles. Equipment such as tractors are used to harvest cotton, from there they are transported to a factory, from the factory that creates the products they’re transported stores or to homes based off-of online shopping. How many miles have your clothes traveled? The average cotton shirt travels 19,883 miles before reaching the consumer.
- Carbon footprint starts from harvest to shipping.
- The average cotton shirt travels 19,883 miles before reaching the consumer.
Filling Up the Land Fills
Pollution: Beyond the pollution of textile materials, we’re wasting and dumping into landfills, annually cheap textile materials used especially during fast fashion contribute to 500,000 tons of microfibers that end up in the ocean. If you break that down, that’s the same as 50 billion plastic bottles.

The fashion industry is negatively impacting our planet at alarming rates. That’s why it’s so important to be a conscious consumer.
